Domaine de Pallus: Vineyards
Domaine de Pallus is situated upstream of both the town of Chinon and Cravant-les-Coteaux, on the right bank of the Vienne. Further upstream the nearest neighbours are Ivan Massonnat at Domaine de Beauséjour, once known as Domaine de Pallus-Beauséjour (nothing to do with the Sourdais domaine; this was the property of the Chauveau family), and Nicolas Grosbois at Domaine Grosbois. Downstream we find Domaine de Bel-Air, sitting at the foot of La Croix Boissée.
The property sits on a narrow strip of clay and limestone soils, a modest south-facing slope sandwiched between woodland atop the plateau (above the vines), and Le Canal (below the vines), a small stream which runs along the foot of the côtes, and which eventually drains into the Vienne (as the Ruisseau Saint-Mexme) at Chinon. Beyond Le Canal are the flatter alluvial soils of the appellation, home to the Les Granges vines of Bernard Baudry (among many others). Domaine de Pallus sits on the road which runs along the midslope, with Bertrand referring to the slope above the road and running up to the woodland as the première côte, and that running down to Le Canal below as the deuxième côte.
