Domaine des Echardières: Vineyards
The domaine is located on the left bank of the Cher, in the village of Angé, just upstream from Montrichard. Indeed it is located just around the corner from Clos Roussely, on the main road which runs parallel to the river. Luc Poullain is based in a rather anonymous building which would not look out of place on a brownfield industrial estate, offering car repairs of questionable worth or maybe discount tiles. Happily the vineyards, located on the limestone slopes which sit behind the cellars, are rather more picturesque.
Today Luc Poullain has 15 hectares of vines planted on these slopes, scattered along the côte between Angé and Pouillé. The vineyard is divided roughly into two, with one half being planted entirely to Sauvignon Blanc, the other planted to a mix of red varieties, namely Gamay, Cabernet Franc and a Cher specialty, Côt. The terroir underfoot is principally clay over limestone, although flint does also have some part to play here.
