Clos la Niverdière: Vineyards
When Martine first started out at Clos la Niverdière she began with 4.5 hectares, but she quickly built this up to 7.5 hectares. This vineyard includes the 3 hectares around the house at La Niverdière in Beaumont-en-Véron, the true Clos la Niverdière. These 3 hectares of vines were planted in 1989, 1990 and 1991, and have since been complanted by Martine, to fill in any gaps resulting from the death of vines. Martine achieved this using vines propagated by massale selection, the work done by Pépinière Bérillon. In addition she has 4 hectares of vines in Cravant-les-Coteaux, and a 0.5-hectare parcel in Les Picasses, acquired in 2023.
The 7.5 hectares is almost exclusively dedicated to Cabernet Franc, planted at a density of 5,000 vines per hectare, but it does also include a tiny 0.3-hectare parcel of Chenin Blanc, planted in 2023 at the very top of Clos la Niverdière, on limestone soils.
Speaking of soils, of the 4.5 hectares in the clos around the house, there are 1.5 hectares at the top of the slope on white chalk soils, while the remaining 3 hectares – which are lower down the slope – are naturally on more alluvial soils. For the most part these soils are more clay, over deeper sand, which itself lies over the chalk, although in the very lowest part of the clos the soil is just sand over chalk.
