Châteaux Simard & Haut-Simard: Tasting & Drinking

Many of my encounters with the wines of Château Simard and Château Haut-Simard have been during visits to meet and taste with Alain and Pauline Vauthier. More often than not this has been during the primeurs, when the wines are poured as unfinished barrel samples. Opportunities to taste the finished wines have been considerably less frequent than this. The primeurs tastings are always informative though, not least because the opportunity to taste the wines against their peers gives some indication of where they sit within the Vauthier portfolio, and to some extent within St Emilion as a whole. The wines usually come after Château de Fonbel, the entry-level wine, sourced from vines on the sandy plain on the far side of the D670, within site of the town of St Emilion but certainly some distance from it.
