Château Quintus: Hubert Gouteyron
In the 1922 Cocks et Féret the Alezais domaine is described as Château Tertre Daugay, for the first time, alongside Château Tertre de Daugay (more on the identity of this section of the vineyard on the next page). It is the first of these two domaines that is immediately relevant, the authors noting that the estate had passed from the Alezais-Duburg family to a new proprietor Hubert Gouteyron. It seems likely that the estate had come to him through marriage, as I have found records of a Marie Jeanne Duburg, possibly a daughter to Philippe Raimond Duburg, who married a Pierre Gouteyron in the early 20th century.
They had at least one daughter named Marie Germaine Gouteyron, born in 1913, so perhaps Hubert was an older son, or simply another name for Pierre (I have found during my research it is not uncommon for some gentleman to go by a name other than that with which they were christened). By this time the domaine was about 10 hectares in size, and was noted by the Cocks et Féret authors to have “une grande partie des vieilles vignes françaises”. This implies that despite the ravages of phylloxera the proprietors had managed to maintain a large parcel of ungrafted vines, of which many were aged more than a hundred years, which perhaps accounted for the wine’s success in the late-19th century. The production has also recovered somewhat, as it is now back up to 10 tonneaux, almost doubling in the space of just fourteen years.
