Château Pindefleurs: Vineyards
Château Pindefleurs occupies a prominent position alongside the D670 as you approach the turning up to the town of St Emilion, sandwiched between the road and the railway line. Although there is a subtle incline up from the level of the road, it is only fair to say that Château Pindefleurs is situated well down this slope, at the foot of the côtes. Near neighbours include Château Patris, Château Carteau and Château Daugay, but these all lie on the other side of the tracks, and have the advantage of a little more elevation. Of course, it is only a short walk from Château Pindefleurs to Château Quintus, or to Château Fonplégade, but it is an uphill walk.
There are 18 hectares of vines planted around the cellars, of which 90% are Merlot and 10% are Cabernet Franc. The density of planting is a respectable 7,000 vines per hectare, and the vines are aged forty years, on average. The soils underfoot are, as you would expect at the foot of the côtes, largely gravel and sand, sitting on a clay base. Dig deep enough and you will, eventually find some limestone elements, but this bedrock is located a long way down.
