Les Vins Contés: Vineyards

The range of wines made by Olivier and Cécile Lemasson at Les Vins Contés has largely reflected the négoce side of their business, which relates to 7 hectares, although they also possess and tend 2 hectares of their own vines, giving them a total of 9 hectares to work with. The fruit acquired comes from vignerons who follow organic principles, although the domaine was not certified as organic prior to 2011. The fruit is purchased when still on the vine, and subsequently picked by hand by the Vins Contés team. The yield across the entire business is in the order of 40 hl/ha. The vineyards are scattered fairly broadly across the Cher Valley, some as much as 40 kilometres distant from the Vins Contés facilities, and as such any discussion of terroir is difficult, as are the exactitudes of which varieties are planted where. Nevertheless, the varieties as you might expect are those typically associated with the Cher Valley, in particular Gamay and Sauvignon Blanc, but also Menu Pineau, Romorantin and Pineau d’Aunis.
