Jean-Maurice Raffault: Wines

The Raffault family having been present in the region for centuries it is perhaps no surprise that Rodolphe Raffault has a number of different cellars at his disposal (the same can be said of a number of other long-established domaines, Couly-Dutheil being the first which springs to mind).

The original cellars and Raffault residence sit on the Rue du Bourg, in La Croix, in Savigny-en-Véron. This is where at harvest time much of the action takes place. Rodolphe also makes use of at least two other cellars though. The most notable of these is the Cave Monplaisir, which opens out onto the Quai Pasteur, which runs along the right bank of the Vienne. These are capacious cellars which Rodolphe shares with two other growers, these being Julien Raffault of Domaine du Raifault, and the team from Domaine de l’Abbaye, previously the dominion of the late Michel Fontaine, but sold after his passing to an Indian conglomerate. The three growers acquired the Cave Monplaisir in 1986.

Rodolphe Raffault stores most of his barrels here, and the trio also offer tastings, the cellars featuring a manned tasting bar. It is a popular spot for tourists to visit, especially cyclists who pass by on the road out front.
