Les Frères Couillaud: Vineyards
As indicated in the opening paragraph of this profile Les Frères Couillaud are based at Château de la Ragotière, which sits on the very edge of the modern-day Muscadet Sèvre et Maine appellation. Even so, the landscape here is rich in vines, even if there are not so many famous domaines here. Perhaps the best known is Domaine des Tilleuls, which is situated on the outskirts of La Regrippière itself.
Terroir matters in this region, and Château de la Ragotière is situated on a bed of superficial deposits, beneath which the bedrock is mostly schist and micaschist, with laminated degradation, and there is streak of amphibolite here too. This is as true of the Ragotière vineyards, on the banks of the Logne, as it is of the Morinière vineyards, which sit close to the Sanguèze, both rivers flowing in a south-westerly direction here towards their union with the Sèvre. The Domaine de Morinière vines have a notable elevation for the region, the slope on which they are planted rising to 93 metres above sea level, one of the highest points for miles around.
