Château Puy-Blanquet: Tasting & Drinking
The style of Château Puy-Blanquet is fashioned not so much in its viticulture, but in its cellars. After all, in terms of its position, on the edge of the cool limestone plateau, mere yards from Château Valandraud and Château de Pressac, there is surely no shortage of potential here. This is a vineyard which could presumably produce wines of dark, savoury and brooding character to challenge some of the best in the region.
During the Jacquart era, the wines appear to have been fashioned with a very light touch. The yields at harvest are not excessive, at 45 to 50 hl/ha, but nor are they determinedly low. And the élevage was perhaps best described as minimalistic, with most of the wine remaining in vat, and only a tiny fraction of the eventual blend coming out to spend a year in oak barrel. In total just 10% of the blend saw some new wood, while the vast majority sheltered within the cold cement walls of the vats.
