Bordeaux 2010 Primeurs: St Estèphe Tasting Notes

As for the rest of the commune, St Estèphe is not to be ignored in 2010. Perhaps it is the less favourable soils in some parts of the commune, perhaps the cooler more northerly position, just that little further down the isthmus between the Gironde and the Atlantic. Whatever the reason, in 2010 there are wines here that give plenty of pleasure.

Sticking with the Bouygues properties, Tronquoy-Lalande is no longer the mean little wine it used to be. Massive investment here has produced stunning results. Lafon-Rochet is another estate to watch here in this vintage, as is Ormes de Pez. And both Phélan-Ségur and Château de Pez have the potential to offer great value, should the price be right.

And finally, a quick comparison with 2009? The data points are few, this not being a commune overly endowed with classed growths and over-performing cru bourgeois châteaux. Nevertheless, where I can compare, a number of these wines look to have turned in a better performance than during 2009. The 2010 vintage is certainly a success for St Estèphe!
