Bordeaux 2010 Cru Bourgeois: Médoc and Haut-Médoc
Although some wines from the famous communes of Pauillac, St Estèphe and Margaux were of good quality, there were more impressive wines to be found in the Médoc and Haut-Médoc appellations in my opinion. There were wines which I would consider adding to my own cellar, provided the price is right of course.
The Médoc
The vineyards of the Médoc lie to the north of Haut-Médoc and the aforementioned communes. The soils here are heavier, with more clay than is found in the gravel-dominated vineyards of the Haut-Médoc, and the area has long been a happy hunting ground at the cru bourgeois level. Although the style here is too often dusty and dry, it is a region capable of producing better wines than it often does. The creation of Goulée by the team at Château Cos d’Estournel, not a cru bourgeois wine but certainly a wine of the Médoc, shows what untapped potential there might be here, potential which can be realised when the vines are taken in hand.
