Bordeaux 2010 at Two Years: Pomerol
I usually begin my reports on Pomerol with an apology; although there as many famous names in this commune as there are in any of the major left bank communes, few ever show up to any tasting. Even my primeurs report, the gathering together of a huge range of notes from the commune, is the result of a sequence of many ‘flying visits’ rather than one tasting. At the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux Pomerol tasting held each year during the primeurs only a handful of châteaux attend, and the same is true of the Union’s tastings held after bottling, at which the notes below were taken. Having said that, this year I have a stunning nine tasting notes for you, Yes, nine! Take a moment to think about that, and perhaps calm yourself a little. I know this is stupendous news, but you must realise that I can accept no responsibility for injuries caused as the result of an attack of hyperventilation, or of fainting.
Nevertheless, as I’m sure you can imagine, there is no show here from Petrus, Le Pin, Vieux Château de Certan or the like here. Nevertheless there are one or two stalwarts, namely Château La Conseillante and Château Clinet (pictured), who always show up and happily they usually bring along a couple of very good wines. That is certainly the case for 2010, with my preference being for Clinet, which showed a delightfully fine lift and composition despite the wine’s overt concentration. La Conseillante was also excellent though, a very superior wine. Others that were of superior quality included Château Gazin.
