Vincent Carême: Origins

Vincent Carême does not hail from a background of intense viticultural experience; his parents were agriculteurs who practised mixed farming, although it is noteworthy that they had 5 hectares of vines in their possession. This little vineyard, handed down from grandparents to parents to Vincent, was the nidus around which the present-day domaine formed. This did not happen before Vincent studied and gained the requisite New World experience which seems to be de rigueur these days, working in South Africa, as well several stages closer to home, in Champagne, Alsace, Sancerre and Muscadet.

Returning home to Vouvray, Vincent started up in 1999, renting and then buying vineyards, adding another 10 hectares to those inherited from his parents, expanding the domaine over time to at least 17 hectares, and converting all these vineyards to organic viticulture from 2003 onwards. This was also the year that he really established themselves in the appellation with the acquisition of a somewhat run-down property with cellars, in Vernou-sur-Brenne.
