Domaine du Clos Naudin: Vineyards

Many who are familiar with this estate simply refer the wines as those of Philippe Foreau, nevertheless I have chosen to use the name proper, Domaine du Clos Naudin. Nevertheless I accept that this name in itself could perhaps provoke a little confusion as we come to my examination of the vineyards, because of the term Clos Naudin. It perhaps suggests the existence of a true clos here, such as that at Clos Baudoin which is not all that far from the domaine, but this is not the case. Domaine du Clos Naudin refers solely to the domaine of the Foreau family.

The domaine has long stood at 11.5 hectares, and its portfolio is notable for the presence of cuvées defined purely by their concentrations of residual sugar and not by the parcel of origin. So whereas Domaine Huet have their three lieux-dits, Le Mont, Clos du Bourg and Le Haut Lieu, and Bernard Fouquet has Les Girardières and other parcels represented in his portfolio, here this is not the case. All the same, there are several significant parcels which deserve some inspection, as many of the vines enjoy an excellent position; indeed, three-quarters of the Foreau vines sit on the première côte.
