Jérémie Mourat: Wines

The Mourat portfolio is complex, with the wines of Clos Saint-André managed quite separately, and several different ranges from the original Mourat vineyards. Before exploring them in more detail, some generalisations on vinification chez Mourat.

Vinifications are carried out at the new Mourat facilities near Mareuil-sur-Lay; the approach is modern, with rigorous sorting using tables des tries, and a slow and delicate pressing using pneumatic equipment. Fermentation may be in stainless steel, or wooden cuve, but large cement Nomblot eggs now also have a place here. Jérémie has recently installed six 16-hectolitre eggs, as well as three large 30-hectolitre eggs and a tiny, 600-litre egg. These are principally used for the Moulin Blanc and Clos Saint-André wines.

The range of wines are as follows.

Collection

This range of wines is easily identified by the unique, distinctively-shaped, squat bottles. There are three cuvées, in three colours. The Collection Blanc, a blend of Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc, and the Collection Rosé, a blend of Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Négrette and Gamay, both see temperature-controlled stainless steel fermentation and three months en cuve before bottling. The Collection Rouge, a blend of Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Négrette and Gamay, from vines aged between 15 and 50 years sees a temperature-controlled stainless steel fermentation, five months en cuve before bottling. The style is fresh, lively and for early drinking.
