Jérémie Mourat: Vineyards
The Mourat domaine is now a huge one, easily challenging the grandest estates of the Loire Valley, with over 127 hectares exploited. This puts Jérémie Mourat in the same league as Henri Bourgeois or Domaine de Ladoucette in terms of production volumes. Of these 127 hectares, 67 hectares are owned by the Mourat family, and are scattered across several distinct domaines as I have already indicated on the previous pages of this profile. In addition, there are another 60 hectares managed en fermage.

Château Marie du Fou looks down onto the Lay as it flows through Mareuil-sur-Lay, which puts it close to 100 kilometres south of Nantes. These are the vineyards of the Fiefs-Vendéens (although many of Jérémie’s wines are bottled as IGP or Vin de France), several tiny dots of vineyard in an ocean of arable farmland. Once thriving appellations, today the number of vignerons here has reduced dramatically. Jérémie Mourat, matched perhaps only by Thierry Michon, is one of the most notable.
