Les Maisons Brûlées: Tasting & Drinking
This is a domaine which, like Clos Roche Blanche, has enjoyed something of a cult following in some quarters. The philosophy is admirable, the intervention in both vineyard and cellars minimal, the aim being to maximise the freshness and flavour within the wines, not to kill it with excessive adjustments or sulphur dioxide.
The style of wine speaks very clearly to me of some of these philosophies, at least this is true of the small number of wines I have tasted. The avoidance of sulphur dioxide leaves the wines prone to oxidation and this is something seen in the Silène cuvée, while an early encounter with R2L’O revealed a less prominent oxidative character with some real funky, organic notes on the side.
