Domaine Huet: Tasting & Drinking
With a presence in the appellation since its very inception (the Vouvray appellation was defined as such in law in 1936, eight years after Victor and Anna-Constance Huet purchased the house and vines at Le Haut Lieu), and with a worldwide reputation for the quality of its wines, it is fair to say that it is impossible to really understand what it is for a wine to be from Vouvray without a knowledge and understanding of the wines of this particular domaine.
Happily, such is the quality of the wines produced here, which is very high and has been so for many decades, developing this understanding is not a hardship for anyone’s palate. Also of relevance is the fact that Vouvray at this level of quality ages very well, and so it is possible not only to get to grips with current releases but also, provided your pockets are deep enough (and they do need to be deep, although not as deep as they would were you shopping for wines of similar age and standing from Bordeaux or Burgundy) it is possible to acquaint one’s palate with the very best the wine has produced from exalted vintages such as 1989, 1947 and almost any other year from the 20th century that you care to mention.
