Chéreau-Carré: Tasting & Drinking
The Chéreau-Carré domaine, scattered though it is, has strong leadership in the shape of Bernard Chéreau and his daughter Louise. No doubt this is key to the domaine’s success; it is certain, on tasting the wines, that we are dealing with one of the more successful estates of the Nantais here. The wines have vibrancy, in some cases they are fruit-rich, while others are imbued with a depth of minerals, and yet in others I find a fine, polished, elegant style. On a trip to Muscadet in 2013 with a group of UK journalists, during dinner one evening – which I have already described in Two Muscadet Dinners – a variety of wines from leading domaines were served, but it was the 13-year old Muscadet from Chéreau-Carré that impressed most, only matched by a couple of cru communal wines from leading vigneron Bruno Cormerais. This is certainly a domaine worth following.
