Clos du Marquis: Vineyards

The vineyards of Clos du Marquis lie to the west of the Grand Clos; thus they lie slightly inland, west of the D2 as it runs north-south through the village of St Julien Beychevelle. Sadly there is no sign or marker to distinguish these vines from those of other St Julien estates, so unless you know exactly where to look you won’t find them. As you head north out of the village on the D2, you need to take the last turn to the left before leaving the village, the Chemin de la Bridane. The vineyards to your right along this little road, all 1.7 kilometres of it, belong to Clos du Marquis. The only exception is a parcel midway along the first section which belongs to Château Léoville-Poyferré.

This strip of vineyards, which run on an east-west axis, are therefore surrounded by classed-growth neighbours. Along the north and east sides they interdigitate with vineyards belonging to Château Léoville-Poyferré (hence the ‘inserted’ parcel mentioned above), but towards the western end they are bordered by the vineyards of Château Pichon-Lalande, which cross over the PauillacSt Julien boundary into the latter appellation. On the south side, closer to the Gironde the vines on the other side of the Chemin de la Bridane belong to Château Léoville-Poyferré and Château Léoville-Barton, but further inland the vines lie next to those of Château Talbot. At the western end there is a section of uncultivated land, beyond which the vines belong to Château Léoville-Poyferré again, as well as Château Moulin Riche.
