The label has not really functioned as a second wine since the 1989 vintage, and so for the past few decades this has been a wine operating at a classed-growth level, but often sold for somewhat less than classed-growth prices. In favourable vintages such as 1996, 2000 and 2005, I have not been averse to adding a few bottles to my own cellar. The style is classic for St Julien, dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (although not to the extent we see in the great domaines that border the Gironde) and in my experience the wines age well.
