Prince Poniatowski: Tasting & Drinking
If I were to rank the producers of Vouvray I would not rank Prince Poniatowski in the top tier, alongside Domaine du Clos Naudin and the like. Nevertheless, I am aware that the wines have their fans, and in good vintages I too have found pleasure here. The 1997 Clos Baudoin Moelleux has rarely disappointed, and various moelleux cuvées from the 1989 and 1990 vintages have, over the years, given moments of joy. There are also disappointments though, especially in weaker vintages, and even in these greater years such as 1989 and 1990 the wines simply don’t hit the heights we see from other leading domaines, such as Domaine Huet or Domaine des Aubuisières. They lacked the depth, substance and evolved complexity to be found in the wines of these greater domaines.
