Lucien Crochet: Vineyards
Pierre Bréjoux wrote of Lucien Picard’s cellars near the Place de l’Église, and indeed this is where we find Gilles Crochet today, his modern and expansive cellars shoehorned Tardis-fashion into the village, at the back of the place. From here Gilles looks after a significant domaine, with 35 hectares of vines to his name.
He has 26 hectares of Sauvignon Blanc, the remaining 9 hectares entirely Pinot Noir of course (these days there is not much call for Gamay from Sancerre, or indeed Chasselas from anywhere in the region). Most of the parcels are located in Bué, but he also has small parcels in he neighbouring communes of Sancerre, Crézancy and Vinon. The Sauvignon Blanc vines are mostly planted on the very typical Oxfordian caillottes which characterise the soils of Bué, while the Pinot Noir are planted partly on Oxfordian caillottes and partly on Kimmeridgian marl.
