Domaine Landron-Chartier: Vineyards

Domaine Landron-Chartier is located close to Ligné, a small town just a few kilometres from the waters of the Loire, almost directly west of Ancenis and about 30 kilometres northeast of Nantes. Viticulture is relatively rare in this part of the Loire Valley; the Landron-Chartier vines are small and isolated outposts of Vitis vinifera, surrounded by tens of thousands of hectares of arable agriculture.

There are 25 hectares of vineyards all told, divided between two communes. One section of the vineyard is in Ligné, planted around the cellars of course. The other section is in Oudon, this latter commune sitting right on the banks of the Loire a couple of kilometres downriver from Ancenis. The vineyards are largely entitled to the Muscadet Coteaux d’Ancenis or the Muscadet Coteaux de la Loire appellations.

Although once farmed conventionally, since 2008 and the arrival of Benoît Landron the domaine has been at least part organic, with full conversion following in 2010, and certification in 2013. Benoît leads the work in the vineyard, assisted by his parents Bernard and Françoise. In total there are six people working on the domaine, Benoît, his parents and three associates.
