Florent Cosme: Vineyards
As of my visit in July 2014 Florent Cosme has just 3 hectares to his name, spread over a number of different parcels, all in Noizay. All of the parcels are located on the première côte, and lie within easy reach of his little cellar.
With a number of different parcels in his possession it should perhaps come as no surprise that Florent has a broad range of different terroirs to work with, taking in just about every possible combination of Vouvray terroir imaginable. Some vines are planted on clay and flint, while other parcels are pure flint; flint certainly dominates then, but there are also small plots of vines planted on sandy soils, and also a little clay and limestone. Notable parcels include Les Champs Rougets, where he has 25-year old vines planted on clay and sand, the fruit destined for his sparkling wines, and also La Motte, where there are older vines. These were planted between 1933 and 1990, and the soils here are clay and flint; the fruit harvested here is destined for his still wines, from sec through to moelleux.
Florent works the soils in preference to chemical treatments, and his vines are currently under conversion to organic viticulture, although he was not ready to seek certification at the time of our meeting. He should be certified organic in time for the 2015 vintage.
