Le Clos Galerne: Vineyards
As noted in my introduction, the heart of Le Clos Galerne is on the Rue Rabelais, one of the main roads which runs right up to the imposing church right at the centre of Saint-Lambert-du-Lattay. The vineyards now cover 11 hectares all told (although some have bee recently replanted, so at the time of writing not all are in production ) and they are mostly situated up on the slopes above the Layon, with several significant parcels here, but he also has a small vineyard in Savennières.
The first lieu-dit of note is one I already mentioned in my introduction, Le Moulin Brûlé. This is located in Beaulieu-sur-Layon, and it looks down not upon the waters of the Layon but on the Route Nationale 60 which loops around here before it crosses the Layon at the Pont Barré. Just above the vines sits the ruined windmill (pictured) which probably dates to the 12th century, and like many in Anjou little more than a stone ruin remains today, the upper wooden sections having long been destroyed many years ago. Initially Cédric bought only the vines, but later he was able to buy and secure the mill itself.
