Château Saint-Pierre: The 20th Century
The estate remained divided in two during the early 20th century. Looking first at the smaller Château Saint-Pierre-Sevaistre, this remained with the same family through to the next generation. Léon Sevaistre had married Matilde Augustine Louise Cuoq (1850 – 1909) on June 3rd 1873, and they had a daughter Juliette (1874 – 1924) and a son Pierre Mathieu (1879 – 1949). Juliette married Charles Legras (1872 – 1942) on November 30th 1899, and it was ultimately Charles who would take on responsibility for the administration of the estate after the death of his father-in-law in 1909.
He did not continue ad infinitum, however, as he soon sold the estate to a Monsieur Bernheim, who quickly sold it on to Charles and Pierre van den Bussche, two négociants. In the 1922 Cocks et Féret these two were listed as the proprietors, turning out 60 tonneaux per annum. Interestingly, the accompanying image shows some impressive cellars which look very familiar; once the cellars of Château Saint-Louis du Bosc, another estate originally in the possession of the Sevaistre family, they served Château Saint-Pierre-Sevaistre for many years, but today they are utilised as the cellars of Château Lalande-Borie (as pictured).
