Bordeaux 2020 at Two Years: St Estèphe

Bordeaux 2020 at Two Years: St Estèphe

Life is, in truth, one long educational journey.

One life lesson I learnt (the hard way) was during the Bordeaux 2021 primeurs (in April 2022) when I endured an eternally long drive up from Bordeaux, along impossibly dark roads, to reach Château Calon-Ségur in time for my 8am appointment. It felt as if I had started the day by hammering vine stakes into my head. And then maybe my eyes as well.

Lesson learnt. In December 2022, back in Bordeaux to taste these 2020s, I stayed overnight in a chambre d’hôtes, well up on the Médoc. Located in a teetering three-storey house overlooking the vines, in the shadow of Château Pichon-Baron, staying here was a revelation. A comfortable bed, a proper breakfast prepared by my host who fussed over me as if I were her recently returned long-lost son, and then a mere fifteen-minute drive to Château Calon-Ségur.

St Estèphe 2020

I breezed into the Calon-Ségur tasting room with the demeanour of Snow White and the work attitude of the Seven Dwarves after downing their third espresso.

This is certainly something I will be doing again.

Anyway, on with the wines.
