Bordeaux 2012 Primeurs: Pomerol
After three days exploring the left bank communes, not only the classic wines of the Médoc – Pauillac, St Julien and so on – from north of Bordeaux, but also those from Pessac-Léognan to the south of the city, as well as tasting many wines from less grand appellations, it was time to head over to Pomerol. I packed up my case and loaded everything into the boot of my hire car; the vineyards of Bordeaux are so widely spread that it made sense to re-locate for a few days, so I would be leaving behind my Médocian hideaway in favour of a small hotel in Libourne, where I had booked a room for a couple of nights.

A small number of châteaux are members of the Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux, and these souls came together at Château La Conseillante for a tasting of their wines. The Moueix portfolio is another fairly well-sized slice of the commune, affording another valuable view. Otherwise, my reports here reflect a long sequence of tastings at one château after another. It would be easy to simply recount them from the first to the last, as each visit taught me something of value about the vintage. As you might imagine though, I am drawn to write about some wines before others, in particular where something about the wine or the visit interested or surprised me. So I shall begin with these.
