Bordeaux 2012 Primeurs: Pomerol Tasting Notes
My tale of visits should perhaps not draw to a close yet, as I also visited the Moueix offices to taste the Moueix portfolio, as well as Château La Conseillante, Château Le Gay and Clos du Clocher, and all had something to offer. The information from Christian and Edouard Moueix on the key milestones – bud break, flowering, véraison and so on – across the Pomerol vineyard made for an interesting comparison with the same data presented by Cos d’Estournel and Latour, or those data represented in the charts from Léoville-Las-Cases.
In Pomerol the timing of the véraison (one of several measures of the progress of the vintage presented, but véraison seems the obvious choice for comparison) started July 30th, and was finished by August 12th. In contrast, the dates of mid-véraison at Cos d’Estournel and Latour were August 12th and August 14th respectively, although of course the fact that the vineyards are planted with different varieties is an important confounding factor that prevents any earth-shattering conclusion from being drawn from this particular nugget of information. Nevertheless, it does illustrate how far ahead Merlot was of Cabernet Sauvignon in this vintage, and this is an important factor in determining the quality and style of the wines in question.
