Pithon-Paillé: Anjou Vineyards

Having started out with a mere sliver of vineyards in 2008, the Pithon-Paillé domaine grew to 13 hectares (not including the vineyards in Saumur, Bourgueil or Chinon, the wines of which were taken on by Jo Pithon and Jo Paillé on a négoce basis). Although the vineyard portfolio included some prestigious sites, including vines in Quarts de Chaume and Savennières, without a doubt we should turn first to Anjou, and to the Coteau des Treilles.

The Coteau des Treilles

The viticultural heart of Pithon-Paillé was without a doubt the Coteau des Treilles, the location of the walk described in the opening paragraph of this profile. This is a steep and rocky slope (pictured) with a 70% incline in parts which sits right on the banks of the Layon, close to both St-Lambert-du-Lattay and Beaulieu-sur-Layon. Jo and Isabelle Pithon purchased the vineyard as if it were a jigsaw, slowly prising the pieces from the hands of 25 different owners over a three-year period, the process eventually yielding 5 hectares of useable land, the entirety of the slope amounting to 7 hectares.
