Château de Passavant: Vineyards

Château de Passavant is located some distance from many of the more familiar names of Anjou, in the southern reaches of the appellation. This region is known as the Haut-Layon, and the château lies close to the source of the Layon itself, the road that runs around the castle being the Rue du Layon (pictured). Around the castle a small village has grown up, this being Passavant-sur-Layon. Just a short distance from the castle, on the other side of this village, is the original Falloux family domaine, which is quite extensive.

Around the village there are many vineyards, especially to the west, and these largely belong to Château de Passavant. There are 55 hectares of vineyard in total (so the domaine has grown considerably since the 1980s), although some are of course distant, particularly those used for producing the domaine’s Coteaux du Layon. The soils are of variable type; superficially there is gravel and red sand, but more importantly deeper bedrocks include various forms of schist.
