Nicolas Reau: Vineyards
Nicolas Reau’s domaine is located at the Clos des Treilles near Sainte-Radegonde, near Thouars, at the southern limit of the Anjou appellation. Despite the name, this is a long way from the Coteau des Treilles, owned by Pithon-Paillé, which sits right on the Layon, about 60 kilometres to the north-west. Treille seems to translate as trellis, so the name probably has more to do with viticulture than any more local meaning.
Being so far south viticulture is a minority activity here; the domaine sits on the outskirts of the town, on the Route de Pompois which (obviously) heads north towards the village of Pompois. To the south lies suburban sprawl, while to the west the domaine is bounded by the course of the Thouet, as it snakes towards the Loire. To the north is woodland, while to the east, and indeed all around as far as the eye can see, there is agricultural land, expansive fields of wheat and vegetable crops, punctuated only by the occasional copse of trees. This is a very isolated plot of vines that Nicolas Reau has bought.
