Château de Bois Brinçon: Vineyards
The domaine is located on the left bank of the Loire, only a few kilometres from Brissac-Quincé, the heart of the Anjou-Villages Brissac appellation, in the commune of Blaison-Gohier. This places it on the edge of the Massif Armoricain, and it is only a short journey upstream before you come to Saumur and the limestone bedrocks of the Bassin Parisien.
Xavier Cailleau has 25 hectares of vineyards in total, scattered across six communes, and he says this gives him eight different terroirs to work with, although in saying this he means that he has eight distinct vineyards or lieux-dits at his disposal. Indeed, this is evident looking through the portfolio of wines, as each of these terroirs is vinified separately, giving Xavier a complex array of wines to deal with.
The plantings comprise mostly red varieties, including Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and a large parcel of Gamay, although it is notable that Xavier also has some tiny plots of Grolleau, not that unusual for Anjou, but also Pineau d’Aunis, which does crop up in the region although it is more traditionally associated with the vineyards along the Loir Valley.
