Domaine Belargus: Vineyards
I still recall Wendy Paillé’s grin as she proudly announced that, having taken Pithon-Paillé into organics, they would soon be converting to biodynamics. This was back in 2012, and writing this profile of Domaine Belargus in 2019 I find it hard to believe so may years have already passed since we had that conversation. Happily the family remained true to their word did this, and just twelve months later Pithon-Paillé was certified biodynamic. Under Ivan Massonnat, these vineyards will remain biodynamic, and those which are newly acquired will be converted to organic and biodynamic viticulture immediately. This means the mainstay for treatments of mildew and oidium will be copper sulphate and wettable sulphur, augmented by the usual mix of biodynamic treatments including plant infusions.
Ivan Massonnat needed to install a team to look after the vines, and he has put one together in double-quick time. The newly appointed chef de culture is Geoffroi Cocard, who is joined by Amaury Chartier, previously of Roc d’Anglade, a leading domaine situated in the Languedoc, close to Nîmes. Amaury has been charged with the task of looking after the Coteau des Treilles, while Geoffroi has overall responsibility.
