Château Ramage La Batisse: Vineyards
Château Ramage La Batisse is located in Saint-Saveur, to the west of the appellation of Pauillac and some of the Médoc peninsula’s most famous châteaux. It sits beyond Artigues, not quite 6 kilometres from the waters of the Gironde. Despite it being just a few minutes drive from its exalted neighbours which sit along the edge of the estuary, it feels quite isolated here. A strip of woodland to the east hides any view of the famous vineyards that lie beyond.
Nevertheless Château Ramage La Batisse has some well-known neighbours. Just to the east, nestled into that strip of woodland, lies Château Liversan. And just to the southeast lies Château Peyrabon, which of course has vineyards in both the Haut-Médoc and Pauillac appellations. The three properties all abut one another, and it is a short walk across the vines from one to the next, and then to the next. The soils here are largely Würmian alluvial deposits of sand, silt, gravel and pebbles, although there are a number of outcrops of limestone, which (perhaps surprisingly) is largely the highly regarded Calcaire à Astéries, laid down during the Oligocene.
