Château Pavie-Macquin: The Chapus Vines

By this time there were two Chapus parcels on the Côte de Pavie. The first, which I believe is the same as that mentioned above, was in the possession of Valentin Chapus, and he was turning out 10 tonneaux. These had actually been sold in 1886 to a Monsieur Decesse, but it seems quite possible (such was his eagerness to buy vines here) that Ferdinand Bouffard subsequently acquired them. Secondly, there were also some vines in the possession of a Mrs Chapus, perhaps a relative of Valentin Chapus, and in 1883 she was also turning out 10 tonneaux. In 1886 she too has disappeared from the côte, so it is plausible that Ferdinand Bouffard also bought these.

Ferdinand was clearly in a buying mood, acquiring vineyards left, right and centre. In 1887, however, he bucked the trend by making a sale, perhaps because the vineyards were just a little too far up and over the crest for his liking. The vines he sold were one of the Chapus portions, and the buyer was none other than Albert Macquin. It was this acquisition, plus several others (detailed below), that would give birth to the domaine that eventually grew into the Château Pavie-Macquin we know today.
