Château Pavie: Vineyards
The estate is located on the slopes to the south and east of St Emilion, the château enjoying a commanding position looking down upon a very broad and extensive sweep of vines. On higher ground, to the east of St Emilion itself, near neighbours include Chateau Pavie-Macquin and Château Troplong-Mondot. Continue east along the road and it is not long before you come to Château Larcis Ducasse. These slopes are a hot-spot for premier grand cru classé estates.
The vineyards of Château Pavie are blessed with a variety of terroirs, in part thanks to their considerable size, the vines accounting for 40.65 hectares of the St Emilion vineyard (the vineyard having been augmented by 3.65 hectares from Château Pavie-Decesse in 2022), in part due to their position on the côtes (as shown below). At the top there is limestone, with thin soils laid over the top. Further down the slope there is more clay and the Molasses de Fronsadais, whereas at the bottom are a few hectares of the somewhat less desirable alluvial soils of gravel, clay and sand, these being the parcels that were once Château La Sable. On the whole though the terroir is favourable, with vines situated on the clay and limestone soils higher up the slope enjoying a superb southerly aspect and good drainage.
