Domaine Vacheron: Vineyards
Today the Domaine Vacheron vineyards cover approximately 48 hectares of the Sancerre appellation. Of the 14 communes entitled to the Sancerre appellation, the Vacherons are naturally, considering their location, almost exclusively confined to the vineyards of Sancerre itself. There is a mix of the typical Sancerre terroirs, with approximately 45% of the vines planted on flinty soils, approximately 45% on limestone soils, and the remaining 10% on clay over limestone.
About three-quarters of the domaine is committed to Sauvignon Blanc for their range of white cuvées, with most utilised for the Cuvée Domaine, although in recent years several lieux-dits have been cleaved out in order to produce a range of site-specific cuvées. About one-quarter of the vineyard is planted to Pinot Noir, of which 1.5 hectares are in Les Romains, and this is the source of fruit for the top red cuvée Belle Dame, the remainder is intended for the Cuvée Domaine.
