Jean Tatin & Chantal Wilk: Vineyards
Jean Tatin and Chantal Wilk have more than 25 hectares of vineyards situated across numerous lieux-dits within two appellations. They market their wines using three different labels, two in Quincy and one in Reuilly. The approach to viticulture is raisonnée, rather than organic or biodynamic, with adherence to the Terra Vitis charter, an organisation which promulgates the virtues of environmentally sensitive viticulture. The vines are naturally all Sauvignon Blanc in Quincy, whereas they have this variety along with small parcels of Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir in Reuilly. The soil between the rows is planted to grass, while yields are controlled by debudding.
In Quincy the vineyards are divided between two domaines, the first being Domaine des Ballandors, which can be viewed as Chantal Wilk’s side of the project. She has a little more than 10 hectares of vines, including the original 6 hectares they planted in the sand and gravel soils of Le Pressoir back in the 1980s. The remaining vines are divided between three other terroirs. There are 1 hectare of old vines on clay and gravel soils in Chaumoux, 1.3 hectares of old vines on sandy clay in Les Victoires, and 1.8 hectares of young vines, planted in 2004, in Les Ballandors. The fruit from these parcels give rise to a single cuvée, details of which I will discuss below.
