Château de la Genaiserie: Tasting & Drinking
The wines of the Coteaux du Layon come in all shapes and sizes. Some are light, with a rather delicate level of residual sugar, showing fresh fruit flavours derived from desiccation and not a hint of botrytis. These entry-level cuvées make attractive easy drinking, and in the region would most probably be consumed as an aperitif – which is why I sometimes refer to them as apéro wines. At the other end of the spectrum you have the showstopper botrytised wines, the sélection de grains nobles, wines made from purely botrytised fruit. These are rich in aromas and flavours of caramel and praline, and while impressive, and often delicious, they do not speak so clearly of the appellation and its terroir.
