Château Paloumey: Vineyards
Château Paloumey is situated in the commune of Ludon-Médoc, or “the rich part of the Médoc” as the authors of Cocks et Féret once described it in their profile of this estate. Indeed, it has a number of significant neighbours, the vineyard bordering those of La Lagune and Cantemerle, and Giscours is close by to the north. The château forms the heart of the property, where Pierre Cazeneuve (pictured below with a recently established sapling, part of an agroforestry project) resides with his family.
Says Pierre;
“Living here gives me a sensitivity to my territory, more so than those people who do not live on the estates they own.”
The vines around Château Paloumey account for approximately 70% of the vineyard and are divided between two main sections. The first is directly around the château at Paloumey, where there are 7 hectares planted up. This is presumably the historic Paloumey vineyard, as established by the Aguirre Vengoa and Uribarren families close to two centuries ago. The second section lies just to the east, on the far side of the D2, on the Lagune plateau; here there are 10 hectares planted. Some of these latter parcels were acquired early in the Cazeneuve era, when land was easier to purchase as even this late in the day the region was still recovering from the malaise of the 20th century, and not all the Lagune plateau was planted up. Some of the parcels were obtained through vineyard exchanges with La Lagune.
