Château Moulin Rouge: Tasting & Drinking
Unlike some other properties in Cussac-Fort-Médoc, most notably Château Lanessan and Château Beaumont, Château du Moulin Rouge is not a widely known name even among Bordeaux drinkers. It is only through frequent visits to the region, during the primeurs or to taste recently bottled wines, or occasionally through tastings with the Alliance des Crus Bourgeois du Médoc, that I have come to know the estate and its wines. Having tasted a few vintages it soon became apparent that these were classically styled, flavoursome and occasionally substantial wines of very good consistency, and good quality.
So Château du Moulin Rouge is an estate worth knowing about, and I would dare to suggest that the wines are superior to one or two other well known names in the commune of Cussac-Fort-Médoc. The only problem is with just 20 hectares of vines feeding into the grand vin, volume of production is not quite the equal of some of its peers. If you can find a bottle, though, I would have no qualms suggesting you give it a go. The 2020, 2018 and 2016 vintages are all worthwhile. So too was the 2015 vintage, a reminder that while this vintage was not as strong on the left bank as some believe it is (it was much better on the right bank), Margaux and the southern parts of the Haut-Médoc appellation, which includes communes such as Cussac-Fort-Médoc, faired much better than their peers further north.
