Château de Lamarque: Vineyards
Château de Lamarque is naturally associated with the commune and village of Lamarque, the latter sitting alongside the D2 as it heads north from the vineyards of Margaux up to those of St Julien. The château sits very close to the palus, the low-lying estuary-side marshes deemed unsuitable for the vine, and used mostly as pasture, which lie just 750 metres to the east.
Some (but not all) of the vines lie in the thin strip of land between the château and the palus. Looking directly south, this strip of vineyards is also home to Château Malescasse and Château Barreyres. To the north, on the other side of the Jalle du Cartillon, a drainage channel which crosses the estate on its way to join the Gironde, are the vineyards of Cussac-Fort-Médoc, and the less well-known Château Tour du Haut-Moulin and Château du Raux. The vineyards of the somewhat better-known Château du Retout lie inland, to the west.
In total the vineyard accounts for 35 hectares of the Haut-Médoc appellation, divided into three parcels all of which are situated on the Lamarque gravels. The largest is the Curade parcel, within the village of Lamarque, east of the château, within the aforementioned strip of vines. This vineyard (pictured) sits next to the road which runs through the centre of Lamarque and down to the waters of the Gironde and the Port de Lamarque, where adventurous sailors can take one of the small Bacs Girondins passenger ferries across to Blaye.
