Château Coufran: Tasting & Drinking
The predominance of Merlot at Château Coufran, together with a reportedly rich and opulent style, has led some to refer to Château Coufran as the Pomerol of the Médoc. This is hardly an original accolade, as I can think of quite a few other ‘Pomerol of the….’ properties on the left bank, not least Château de Pez, the Pomerol of St Estèphe, which is hardly a million miles away.
In my experience this is a decent cru bourgeois property offering worthy workhorse wines in the better vintages, and less interestin quality in poorer vintages. It never excites, but gives a very staid, left-bank experience, a wine that is more austere than aspirational despite the dominant variety. Pomerol-like is not a description I would readily apply to it. (4/11/04, updated 6/7/17)
