Château Barreyres: Vineyards
Château Barreyres is located in Arcins, southeast of Lamarque, very close to the waters of the Gironde. Indeed, the château itself sits on the very boundary between the cultivated land planted with vines to which is to the west, and the uncultivated palus which sits to the east, between the vineyards and the estuary. The Barreyres vineyard thus sits on a gentle slope of clay, sand and gravelly soils looking out towards the water, which as any knowledgeable drinker of Bordeaux should know is an enviable position to have.
Today the estate covers a remarkable 240 hectares of the Médoc peninsula, although much of this land is given over to pasture and woodland. There are 109 hectares planted to vines which have the Haut-Médoc appellation, and these are 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot, planted at a density approximating 9,600 pieds per hectare. The work in the vineyard is, as you might expect, entirely conventional, with no suggestion of any movement towards organic or biodynamic viticulture.
