Bordeaux 2015 Primeurs: Médoc Tasting Notes

Having utilised the weather data from Château Potensac on the previous page, it seems only fair to come to this château here, before my tasting notes. I tasted this particular barrel sample at Château Léoville-Las-Cases, alongside the other Delon wines (except for Château Nenin).

Château Potensac

The story of the vintage here at Château Potensac is very similar to that at Goulée, hardly surprising as the vineyards are only a few kilometres from one another. There was favourable weather during the flowering, a véraison which was rapid, homogenous and earlier than that seen in 2012, 2013 or 2014, followed by picking beginning in later September. Both August and September saw about 100 mm of rain, as per the chart on the preceding page. The Merlots came in first, starting on September 25th, followed by the Cabernets, the workers eventually downing their secateurs on October 11th. As elsewhere picking was sporadic, as demanded by the fruit, with eleven days of picking in total.

The yield at Château Potensac was 50 hl/ha, the assemblage in 2015 45% Merlot, with 38% Cabernet Sauvignon and 17% Cabernet Franc, not a particularly unusual blend for the grand vin, although the Merlot has certainly been lower in other vintages. A saignée was carried out in vat, in order to concentrate the wine, improving the ratio of solids to juice. I would not be surprised if this were true of many other estates as well, but I did not have the opportunity to ask.
