Jean-Max Roger: Vineyards
The domaine is located at the roadside running through the centre of the village of Bué, and the majority of the vineyards are close by, dotted around the same village. All told the Roger family have 33 hectares of vines to work, of which 27 hectares are in the Sancerre appellation, the remaining 6 hectares being more distant, in Menetou-Salon.
Jean-Max, Thibault and Etienne have vines on all three of the classic Sancerre terroirs, but being based in Bué we should not be surprised to learn that the vast majority of their vines in this appellation are located on caillottes, this being the soil type best associated with the village. They do have a small area planted on terres blanches though, as well as a single parcel of Pinot Noir on flint. Outside Bué, they have vines in the communes of Sancerre, Amigny, Crézancy and Vinon. Concentrating on Bué, this commune has several prestigious lieux-dits, and the Roger family have parcels in several of them, including Le Grand Chemarin, Le Clos Derveau, Saint Martin and a small parcel in Le Chêne Marchand. All told their Sancerre vines are 70% Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Pinot Noir.
