Château Sénéjac: Vineyards

The estate, including château and vineyards, are located on several gravel croupes in the commune of Le Pian Médoc, and from a viticultural view they are quite isolated. They are largely surrounded by woodland, a golf course and a number of residential properties, the nearest vinous neighbour of any note being Château d’Arsac, two miles to the north along the D208.

Of the estate’s 150 hectares today 41 hectares are planted to vines, the varieties established being 52% Cabernet Sauvignon (up a few percentage points in recent years), 36% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc (down a few percentage points) and 4% Petit Verdot. New drainage, essential for this part of the Médoc, was installed in 1983. The vines have an average age of 35 years, and the fruit is picked by hand, with a stated average yield of around 45 hl/ha (although looking at recent data on production and size of vineyard, I suspect the figure is a little lower than this).
